In Africa, 1 in 3 children does not go to school and two thirds of the 40 million non-attenders are girls. In Kenya, 1 in 3 children do not attend school and of the non attendees, 2 are girls.

  • In Kenya, the Student-Teacher ratios is 40:1 nationally and in many poorer communities, it ranges from 50 to over 80:1. In many classrooms 3 to as many 7 children share textbooks while other supplies are virtually nonexistent.
  • Despite these challenges, Kenyans highly value education and typically make great sacrifices to try to pay school fees, purchase books and uniforms. When a family is unable to pay these costs, children cannot attend school.
  • While school enrollment exceeds 100% in primary school, it drops precipitously to 48% in secondary (high school) and to less than 3% in tertiary (college) since there is no government funding for secondary school or college.
  • Compounding these problems, are an ever increasing number of Orphans which today total over 12 million in Africa and over 900,000 just in Kenya.
